Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary
Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary is located approximately 48 km from Srinagar. Blessed with immense natural beauty, this paradise comprises species of flora and fauna, which unfortunately have now become endangered or almost extinct. The main attraction of the Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve is the presence of musk deer. Other animals to be sighted here are the brown bear, black bear, red fox and leopard amongst others. The biosphere is a delight for birdwatchers, as a variety of resident and migratory birds can be traced in the reserve. Pheasants, vultures, snow cock, blue rock pigeon, Kashmir roller, European Hoopoe, Jungle Crow and a number of other colourful, radiant birds can be spotted here. A number of coniferous trees grow in this reserve. The principal species include Cedrus Deodara, Pinus Griffithii, Abies Pindrow and Aesculus Indica amongst others. The number of shrubs and herbs enhance the beauty of the biosphere reserve, and swirl their magic wand making the air cool and fresh.
