Kankaleshwari temple is one of the famous sites in and around Barddhaman (Burdwan). There are several temples of various gods and goddesses in Burdwan but the goddess Kali is worshiped more than any other. A lot of Kali temple (Mandir) are found around Burdwan. Among them the most famous are Sarbamangala Kali Mandir, Foujdari Kali Mandir, Kankaleshwari Kali Mandir, Sadhak Kamalakanta Kali Mandir, Vidya Sundar Kali Mandir etc. Every one of them had their own history. But here the Kankaleshwari Kali Mandir is our place of interest. This very temple is situated at Kanchan Nagar. Some people as well as experts believe that Kanchan Nagar was a head-quarter of the great King Sasanka, a contemporary king of Bengal (then known as Gour-Banga) in the time of Harsa of Kanauj. The Idol of the temple was found during 1700 AD in the adjacent river, Damodar. The idol was engraved on a single black Basalt stone, believed to be of the pre-Aryan age. It resembles the human skeleton with the muscles, bones, vein, artery and the nerve system clearly depicted. The idol then established in the temple. The temple has nine (9) peaks and hence known as ‘Nabaratna Temple.’ (Only 6 peaks are seen) There is a Shiva temple nearby which is Pancharatna (5) Temple. (3rd photo) In every occasion of New Moon in the month of Karthik (During October-November) a special Puja is performed and thousands of people gathered to celebrate. Any tour of Burdwan would be incomplete if this place is not visited.
