Under the British Raj, East India Company officials from Calcutta (Kolkata) made Barasat a weekend retreat and built houses with gardens. Warren Hastings built his villa in the heart of Barasat, and Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was the towns first Indian deputy magistrate.
