Bankura is undoubtedly a place of immense Historical importance. Dating of the different temples, forts and monuments reminds you about the pre-nabab’s time and Bengal during that time. Siddheswar temple, located at the Onda region of Bankura, West Bengal is even older than that and claims to be the oldest of its kind in the entire landmass of Bengal. The temple is well known for the excellent archeology inside it. Sculptured arts inside the temple wall are excellent and they are worthy to be watched. In fact, your trip to Bankura is surely incomplete, if you have not visited this temple. The temple is having a Shiva Linga inside, made of rock and on the inner wall, there are different arts of Ganesha and other Hindu lords. Arts and architecture o the temple is really old, but at first impression, it will not seem like that to you, since it is at a very good condition still now. The temple is built on an area which is 230 square feet and its looks slim, but straight and erect having good height. In fact, it is the second only temple after the Gokul Chand Temple, which is made of rock and not from terracotta art. The temple is age old and it is having such an age, when the terracotta art has not been developed. Historians claim by dating the temple, that it is as old as 1000 years and it was built before the Mughals came to India even. Hence, in terms of history too, this is an important temple, claiming to be the oldest of its kind in the entire Bankura District. The temple is located in the Onda region of Bankura and is about 20 kilometers from the main town. This is located at the other end of the district and is having a connection more with Bardhaman than with Purulia or Hugli. Damodar river is at close proximity to the temple and one can visit the ghats nearby too. To reach the place, bus service is there to Onda from Bankura man town.
