Gokulchand Temple

Gokulchand Temple
India     West Bengal     Bankura

Located only a few kilometer from the terracotta temples of Bishnupur, Gokulchand Temple is the grandest of the few Bengal stone temples. The 64 feet high five pinnacled temple surrounded by a high wall, giving the impression of a fort rather than a temple. The temple was dedicated to Lord Krishna and is having a huge five headed structure, fully made of stone. The five headed structure is having entrance from four sides, each of which is having three gates, opening it to the inner wide corridor. Inside the temple, there is a huge chamber, which once held the idol of Lord Krishna, but is now emptied. The Temple compound is also having a great Natmandir, straight to one of the gates to the main temple, which is wide enough but its length is really amazing. The entire structure is made of stone and that is a big wonder to the researchers even about the source of so much stone. Even, the high wall, that makes the look of the temple converted to a fort, is also made of stone. The temple is near to the main town of Bishnupur and for tourist, to reach the temple, the only way was to come through he town. However, ten years back, when The CM of the state was Rail Minister, rail track has been laid and now the place is well connected with rail too.
