HMI Museum

Everest Museum is situated in Darjeeling. Situated within the complex of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and adjacent to the Mountaineering Museum, Everest Museum traces the history of attempts on the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. A chronological history of attempts on Mt. Everest has been displayed starting from 1852 when Mount Everest, then known as peak XV, was measured by an Indian surveyor, Radhanath Sikdhar, and later named as the world's highest peak after Sir George Everest, the then survey general of India. The museum has an array of displays that include a collection of photographs of various expeditions, manuscripts, autographs, and books belonging to a few famous mountaineers. A letter written by George Mallory, a British climber, who died while trying to scale Mt. Everest is also displayed. As the museum is located within the grounds of Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, one can also visit the zoo and the Himalayan Nature Interpretation Centre. Best enjoyed in the winters, the museum remains open from Friday to Wednesday from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. There is an entry fee of INR 20 for Indians and INR 100 for foreigners. The museum is well within the city and is easy to reach.
