Silvassa is the capital of the Indian Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The city has a large number of factories and industries providing significant government revenue, which allows the city to maintain a low level of taxation. During Portuguese rule, Silvassa was also known as Vila de Paço d'Arcos, after the town of the same name near Lisbon (Paço de Arcos, Oeiras). Silvassa has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.
